Stellantis claims that for about eight months, its manufacturing plants produced Alfa Romeo Tonales and Dodge Hornets with defective or missing safety equipment. It is therefore recalling 4,660 crossovers in an effort to fix the problem. Affected units might not fulfill the minimal noise standards for electric and hybrid vehicles.
When in reverse, hybrid and electric vehicles make the same noise that serves to warn oncoming pedestrians of the existence of a vehicle. In a submission to the NHTSA, Stellantis claims that certain Hornet and Tonale vehicles may have their pedestrian alert siren disabled or not present at all. After creating each model in this manner for nearly eight months, it only then noticed the possible issue.
The problematic build phase started on December 13th, 2022, and didn't conclude until the factory put a patch in place on September 12th, 2023. During that period, 2,032 Dodge Hornets and a further 2,628 Alfa Romeo Tonales were produced, both of which are subject to this recall. The recall covers both the 2023 and 2024 model years.
Notably, only the hybrid Tonale and Hornet are affected by this recall. Additionally, owners should have little problems determining whether their car has the aforementioned issue. A warning tone should play when shifting into reverse. It's likely that the system is absent or disconnected if it doesn't.
Owners who are affected can speak with their nearby dealer to have the problem repaired. Depending on what is necessary, the dealer will either connect the system or do a fresh installation while it is in the shop. It's important to note that Stellantis has stated it will inform dealers and owners on December 12, 2023, so it's conceivable they won't be aware of the situation until then.
