The recall was prompted by eight vehicle fires, all of which occurred when the vehicles were parked and turned off, with six connected to chargers.
The recall also affects 3,856 vehicles in Canada and 9,249 elsewhere, bringing the total to 45,230 units.
Jeep has developed a remedy for the issue, which involves a software flash, although battery pack replacements may be necessary in some cases.
The company estimates that only one percent of vehicles have the defect.
Owners are advised not to recharge their vehicles and to park outside, away from structures and other vehicles.
No accidents or injuries have been reported in relation to the fires.
